Back in September the Ranch welcomed Nelson, a Black-and-Tan Hound pup. He goes right off the charts when it comes to adorable factor. There is something about the big ears, huge paws and goofy gait that makes one smile when Nelson lopes up. He is a very happy and confident pup, with a definite nose for mischief.
Nelson is the Ranch's second hound dog and he has big paws to fill. Our first hound was a Walker who we adopted when she was a year old. It took Tippy a few months to settle in, but once she had mapped out her new home she went on patrol. For eleven years she ruled the river bottom where our ranch headquarters are- bears and cougars rarely visited, coyotes gave our yards a wide berth, and varmint numbers stayed manageable. You wouldn't necessarily see Tippy, but she was always nearby keeping an eye on things. She'd make you crazy sometimes- turning around a whole herd of yearlings because she HAD dig out a gopher, stealing an entire barbecuing lamb off the fire, running away with one's jacket to line her nest- but we all miss her company and hard work. Tippy is the hound on the left of the photo below.
